Ideas
I toyed with the ideas of focusing on 'Star Trek', 'Night at The Museum' and even 'Narnia' (Lion, witch and the Wardrobe). I ended up focusing on Star Trek as I'm more passionate about it.
Research
During my research I needed to find out the size options for enamel badges and in doing so I found the website 'www.enamelbadges.com'.
Artists of note
Jhonny Núñez
Leoalexandre
erikas chesonis
Daniel Nyari (specifically Wired Italy)
Roadmaps and practice
Before I chose an artist to use as a roadmap I wanted to find a video to show me the tools and ways to use them, in which I found this video which was perfect to get my head around the tools.
Jhonny Núñez
This was the artist I chose to use because I love his colour palettes and composition. I only chose to do as much to get the basic idea on how he creates his pieces.
Daniel Nyari
Practice
In able to further understand the illustration tools I spent some time creating some self portraits and Star Trek pieces to lead me into the main designs.
Further ideas
Quick ideas for the backing and placement.
Creating the badges
I wanted to create three different ships from the Star Trek series, I chose the 'Enterprise', 'Deep Space 9' and the Klingon ship 'Bird of Prey'. Whilst doing so I also created the Starfleet badge to potentially use for the background but liked the shape so much I went further with messing with the design, coming out the the galaxy design inside the logo.
'Live Long and Prosper'
Backing display designs - in style of the t-shirts worn by the crew.
Both the colours of the the ships and the classic colours associated with Star trek.

The ship pins on their own without the backing.
Gold and silver inlay and text.
Four ships and the 'Spock' badge.
Chosen backing and the galaxy backing design.
After feedback
final badge designs and mock ups
I decided to focus on the already existing badges in the Star Trek universe, for this I chose the Starfleet badge, Klingon and the Borg.
