NOTES TO SELF -
- Write more in depth of the process
- Add colour hues and type names

Brief

Our University was working with the Cumberland Council and the Tullie and any work submitted has an opportunity to be chosen to be showcased in Carlisle centre.

We were given five themes to choose from,
  • Carlisle is wild
  • Carlisle is social
  • Carlisle is industrial
  • Carlisle is revolutionary
  • Carlisle is resilient
We were to create two finished illustrations in response to two themes.
I wanted to focus primarily on the themes of 'Industrial' and 'Wild' but may play around with the other themes as well.

Indepth research

Focusing on the themes such as Industrial and Wild, I had basic ideas in mind but needed to research already existing posters to give me further inspiration.
Industrial
Wild - Animals
Wild - Flowers

Poster one - Industrial

Inspired by A.M. Cassandre and the 'Flying Scotsman' poster, I wanted to base my first idea on Carlisle's railroad history and limiting my colour pallet to attempt to draw the viewers eyes.

Process
This the progress of simply creating the main illustration.
Process of experimenting with how the text could be incorporated into the design itself
Experimenting the the colours and shades of the tracks and text.

Poster two - wild collage

This idea was mostly inspired by the collaging examples I found myself, I wanted to use the silhouette of a heron in order to display various photographs of the wildlife and nature that can be seen when taking a stroll through Carlisle.

Progress
Process of the collaging overtime and then a play around with the saturation to see how it would turn out.
Experimenting with type fonts and placement, using the transform tool.

Poster two for wild - Wild flowers
Another idea I had for the wildlife is to focus on the county national flower, the 'parnassia palustris' or the 'marsh grass of Parnassus, northern grass-of-Parnassus, or just grass-of-Parnassus, and bog star. Inspired by the botanical poster I've found during my research I wanted to focus on using the 'multiply' and 'difference' tools to create the idea of the overlapping colours.
Process
Wanting to stay within the national colours of the Cumbrian flag, these are the first two layers of flowers and some experimenting with the 'multiply' and 'difference' tools to see how they would appear on a darker background.
